Wood and Stone Carving Functional Art

Wood and Stone Carving Functional Art

What is functional art?

Functional art refers to aesthetic objects that serve utilitarian purposes. The genre is remarkably inclusive: it encompasses everything from furniture and lighting to dishes and even books. Functional art is generally applied art – art created for use, designed to serve a purpose and with an aesthetic in mind.

Why is functional art important?

What are the benefits of functional arts? Many of the products we use, such as ceramics, quilts, baskets, and furniture, have a practical purpose while also being fashioned or ornamented in an artistically beautiful manner. Hand carved doors, tables, furniture and wall décor’ offer a unique way to enhance objects that are used in daily life.

Functional art and Stone Revival

The Fine Art marble and hardwood Sculpture created by Sculptor M. Julian Isaacson is easily integrated as Functional Art into your home, office or commercial location.

These beautiful works are not just another pretty face – but a unique statement that enhances your everyday life by incorporating art with function. The sculptor will work with you to create the Custom Commission work that represents your vision.

Functional Art can be created in a multitude of ways via a custom made door, an arched wrought iron gate for your garden, a marble and wrought iron bar with hand carved panels, a two-sided panel carved on two sides utilized as a partition or “curtain” or perhaps a hand carved fireplace.

Another form of Functional Art is utilized via Wainscoting using Imperial Tiles as an installation. Imagine a hand carved marble sculpture Imperial Tile, moulded and cast in tuff-stone, colored to order, for use as a wall decor, in the bath or kitchen, a window accent – or as a garden or pool tile.

The ability to create a work of Functional Art is limited only by the artists’ and the client’s imagination. If your home or business, or commercial location needs a special accent, a piece of Functional Art created specifically for you, Contact Sculptor M. Julian Isaacson directly.

Functional Art Examples

Secret Garden Gate

The artist commissioned the frame for this beautiful garden gate. The “coin” is carved on both sides with an image of an oak tree. The iron accents are oak leaves. The “coin” is easily removed for crating and shipping purposes.

Family Tree Table

This is a commission piece designed specifically for the client in Imperial Vermont Marble for their home. The piece is 4’ by 11’ by 4”.

Isis

Isis was designed by the client for her home and depicts her spiritual journey. She also requested a tile copy of the piece, which began the process of molding and pouring tile copies of the artists’ bas-relief works.

Crane Door

Cranes are a very popular bird in Southern Oregon. This particular installation is the front door of a home where Cranes nest in nearby marshes. The art is actually glued onto the custom made door using a high grade construction glue; then decorative iron work completed the piece.

Wine Room Entry

This installation utilizes the fine art tile reproduction process. The custom designed tiles were originally carved in marble, then molded to create repetitive tiles. The tiles were poured utilizing a high grade plaster and colored to match the clients’ vision. They were “wrapped” around the entrance to the clients’ wine room.

Deer Dance Bar

This was a custom design by the Sculptor. The Iron frame is powder coated and was commissioned by the artist and designed to be utilized inside or outside. The two bas-relief panels are called “Deer Dance” and are easily removed from the frame for shipping. The counter top is made from Vermont Green Verde Marble.
